Coping after redundancy – Support Group
Since late 2007 thousands of people, and positions, have been made redundant. This number is estimated, as at March 2009, to be somewhere around 16,000. And losing your job can indeed be a scary thought, especially for someone who has been secure in a job for years, is close to the age or retirement, or is the main bread winner in the family.
With any traumatic change people usually go through five stages of (1) Denial, (2) Anger, (3) Bargaining Phase, (4) Depression, and then (5) Acceptance. How quickly we can overcome the first four phases, and then how quickly we deal with the acceptance phase determines what next happens to us. What we need to do when confronted with redundancy is quickly move to the stage of acceptance and then just as quickly formulate a plan of action.
In dealing with the stages through to acceptance it is sometimes very necessary to have a support group around you, which would include people who can objectively provide advice (professionals) and also others with similar experience, current and past, so that you have a support group that you are working with. It will always help to talk to this core set of people as it helps to (a) take the emotions out of any resulting action; (b) provide objective advice on the best way to move forward; and (c) allows for an exchange of ideas between people in similar position and could likely result in rewarding synergies being formed.
Mindyuhbusiness.com was formed with that objective in mind. We seek to provide a forum where one who is going through the traumatic experience of job loss can find support for ideas, coping, and develop an action plan for going forward.
For paid members, the site offers a service where people with specific questions can seek advice from experts (which is anonymous) and will have access to opportunities that are available and will be able to have job listings and matches mailed directly to them based on the areas of interest they indicate. We will also set up interview appointments by sending to prospective employers the best resumes from our members’ database for that position.
