Outsourcing As A Business
When one loses their job, it often feels like the end of the world. This is because it is a fundamental shift in what you are used to and this creates an anxiety and feeling of helplessness. But if you think about it even while working in a 9 to 5 job, what you are really doing is selling your service to someone under a contract and is no different from selling that service to many other persons under different contracts. Even employment then is really business.
What employment often offers is a sense of security, which is why people tend to prefer employment. But if one can properly manage the risk of self employment, so that it is not much riskier than employment then it would be a much preferred option. It is sometimes difficult for people to make that transition and in many instances need professional help to do so, which is always advisable.
In any event, the changing business environment means that job security is not as safe as it used to be and in fact having your own business is becoming more and more attractive. Many companies have already, and will continue to move towards outsourcing.
This provides an opportunity to the business savvy professional. If you think about it, as companies seek to rebuild and once again become economically strong many will need expert services, which they will more than likely get from outsourcing. Professionals should therefore look at this as a business opportunity.
People offering this service can take a few steps to prepare for this and ensure a successful venture by doing the following:
  1. Identify what skills the market needs
  2. Assess whether or not you have that skill set. If you do not you should think about if you can upgrade your skills or do you want to focus on something else. In upgrading your skills you can either go with formal education, or what I call e-learning – i.e. using the Internet as a learning tool.
  3. It is important to read read and read as much as you can to stay ahead of the competition. Remember what you are selling is knowledge.
  4. Use social networks to market your skill set – they are a low cost and effective way of marketing.
  5. Join discussion forums and it is always best to be the dominant force in the forums so that people look to you for advice.
  6. Set up a company as the face for your services and ensure you have a good operational system in place. It provides a lot more professional look.
  7. Identify your weaknesses and what you want to achieve – such as the value added service to be provided – and partner with people who can complement your weaknesses
  8. Document a business plan as a guide to developing your business
So if you find yourself out of a job, or even if you think you can outsource your services more successfully than in employment, outsourcing is a good opportunity. Remember companies will always need vale added professional services.
